TRUE CRIME / HISTORY

The Devil You Know with Sarah Marshall
In the 1980s and 90s, Satan and his followers were accused of brainwashing children, sacrificing babies, and infiltrating North American society on a massive scale — yet these thousands of alleged Satanists were nowhere to be found. Even so, the narrative became embedded in our cultural memory, warping everything it touched — including the lives of innocent people.. And it never quite died out. In a new 8-part series, Sarah Marshall (You’re Wrong About) explores the tangled web of the Satanic Panic, in a journey that will take you everywhere from Victoria, B.C. to rural Kentucky to San Antonio, Texas.
This is a show about the people who experienced the Satanic Panic in real-time — the believers, the skeptics, the bystanders, and the wrongfully-convicted. What was it like to be a psychologist told to look for Satanists in every case; a mother slowly recovering memories of supposed Satanic abuse; a teenager accused of conspiracy to murder? The stories of these eyewitnesses point us toward the real underlying problems — individual and societal — that the Panic was a response to. The fault, as ever, was not with Satanists, but in ourselves.

From chatbots to surveillance fears, we examine how emerging technologies are reshaping the landscape of paranoia and how these modern delusions echo, amplify, and challenge our historical understanding of the human mind.

industry news
🪄 A new podcast tool called Podcast Magic has released that lets you take a quick screenshot out of Spotify or Apple Podcasts and then get a clip and transcript of the moment in the podcast you’re listening to.
📖 A different tool, called PodChapters lets podcast creators use AI to setup automatic chapters for their podcasts.
▶️ Sounds like Netflix is pushing further into podcasts, this time looking to make a deal with iHeartMedia to license their video podcasts.
🍎 Now that Spotify has taken over as the app most used to listen to podcasts, it seems like Apple has finally woken up with some great new podcast discovery features in Apple Podcasts. iOS 26.2 is getting: 1) Automatically created chapters (I’m guessing that’s only for episodes that don’t have manually created chapter markers), 2) Podcast mentions - will allow listeners to see and follow podcasts right from the player and transcript, and a new “From This Episode” feature that will allow listeners to quickly access the links shared in a podcast on the episode page.
🇺🇸 🎙️ An interesting look at podcast appearances by the various political candidates in the just passed elections by Edison Research. Podcasts continue to play an outsized role in political impact.
